Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to contest particular decisions from the official, following the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
