Our Leading Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Number One Spot.

At first glance, Lux may look more like a challenging university quiz than a new pop album by a musician who just had a last single featured an international pop icon. Broken across four separate movements and voiced in 13 languages, we have a head-spinning orchestral-influenced album that delves into female mystery, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, often through the lens of different female saints. The end of a romance—a topic treated with raw openness elsewhere—soars heavenward on this record, buoyed by the constant sound of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among a long list of collaborators. The pure daring alone renders the efforts of other pop stars seem quite laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that this album succeeds in avoid dry academic chin-stroking is almost a miracle, with complete credit going to the artist. While it's not her first album to fuse historical sounds with the present, its scale feel far greater on Lux, and the balancing act more precarious. The element that truly elevates her fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls you up in its tornado. When she's breaking your heart in two, you still want to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This playful energy shines clearly on a stunning piano-led song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, and we hear a spontaneous laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo crashes down like comedic impact. The song then shifts to the frenetic track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm with Lux is that the listener never quite understand—or even want to know—where it will go to next."

Nearly every song ends in a completely different point than where it started. A track examines the transient nature of celebrity with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic work begins off dark and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, until sudden flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Experiment and Pop

A key achievement on the album is straddling the line between radical innovation and broad appeal. It is little surprise that it has achieved the artist's first work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language builds around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly nagging hooks as it spins upward. This feat gets echoed by a different expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving layered melodies like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a grand level, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its own inherent excess. It is an abundant well of hidden treasure that takes time to completely mine but never feels like a chore. While some big pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish feast where the guests at it, some intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter between conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about useless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
