Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
