Donald Trump and Colombia's president have turned up the tone of their exchange, heightening strains in their relations after American military units struck Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from his position.
"He has narcotics facilities and production sites and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.
Rising Threats coupled with Allegations
Talking to the press on Sunday, Trump suggested comparable armed intervention against Colombia, claiming Colombia is also "very ill" and governed by an unwell individual involved in producing cocaine and trafficking it to America."
Although Colombia stands as the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is personally involved in the trade.
A Deteriorating Partnership
Colombia was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and benefited from wide political approval in the US capital, yet ties have soured dramatically after Trump assumed the presidency.
Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups including the Golf Clan, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom demobilised following a 2016 peace deal.
The President's Strong Response
Upon being questioned if armed intervention comparable to Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump replied: "It sounds good from my perspective."
President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am not illegitimate and I am not a drug trafficker," he stated.
"He comments without knowledge. Cease defaming me," he wrote online.
"If US bombs target peasants, they will become a multitude of fighters in the hills. And if they detain the president, which a large part of the country holds in high esteem, they will release the powerful force of the people," Petro warned.
From Guerrilla to President
He passed a period in his early life as a member of the leftist M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he was involved in writing the nation's constitution over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He was mayor of the capital city before winning the nation's highest office.
"I swore to abstain from using a gun ... but for the homeland I would take up the fight," he vowed.
Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Rejection
Colombia's defense chief stated that Petro's personal security had received additional support.
Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have expressed support with the US president, however, leaders spanning the ideological divide have denounced the notion of American military action on Colombia.
Political and Economic Strains
The US revoked his travel authorization subsequent to he encouraged US troops to refuse orders that violate law. Months later, it placed asset freezes targeting Petro, his wife and various associates.
Concurrently the US was building up its forces in the region and targeting suspected drug boats against Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed operations on maritime targets off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
